Randy pointed out:

2 cents worth on the question of marinas charging by length or square foot.

My Marina Charges by the surface area.

Long Beach, California, Downtown Shoreline Marina charges by the square foot.
My cat is 43' length over all and 22' beam, I am charged for 946 square feet
at $0.80 per square foot per month...  <snip>

Gary contritely replies:

OK. My bad.  I see that there are indeed some marinas charging for area
instead of the more traditional overall length.  Is it a coincidence
that these changes appear where the dockage is at a high premium?  I
hope so, as I will remain in the PNW for the forseeable future, and with
our significant slip vacancy rate we might dodge the higher cost bullet
on this for a while yet.  See, even I can learn something new on these
computer network list thingies.
