Med Bound 2007 is gathering steam, with seven owners reporting that
they plan to join the rally to Bermuda, four of them going on to the
Azores, and five making the passage from the Azores to Gibraltar.
One yacht will make a passage directly from Newport to Horta.

Although other yachts are welcome, all yachts on the list to date
are Nordhavns.

What does Med Bound 2007 offer passagemaking powerboaters? Like the
Nordhavn Atlantic Rally 2004 (NAR), this event offers:

-- Safety, security and camaraderie of cruising "in company"
-- Pre-arranged dockage in Bermuda, the Azores, and Gibraltar
-- Social events in each port
-- Weather routing from the same company used on the NAR
-- Pre-departure survey strongly recommended for each yacht,
using NAR pre-departure survey checklists
-- Pre-departure "inspections" of each boat by captains of other
yachts making the crossing
-- Pre-departure briefings and seminars
-- Daily roll calls and tracking of all yachts

On the other hand, there are a number of important elements from the
NAR that will NOT be present for this crossing. There will be:

-- No official sponsorship by PAE or its suppliers
-- No escort vessels from PAE
-- No technical support in the form of mechanics, divers, etc.
embarked in the yachts which are crossing
-- No embarked doctors, EMTs or other medical personnel
-- No up front fee each captain will be entirely responsible
for his yacht's expenses

The plan is to follow the methodology of the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally
2004 as closely as possible and as closely as weather will permit.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

All rally yachts should arrive in Fort Lauderdale ready for
departure, including:

--An out-of-the-water trip survey by a reputable yacht

surveyor within the 90 days preceding the start of Med Bound 2007
--The captain and mate should have completed at least one
600-NM non-stop passage in the vessel during the past year
--All vital and important systems should be up, running and
fully functional
--Life raft should be adequate to accommodate for persons
onboard and should have a current inspection valid through the end
of the rally
--All spares required for the trip should be onboard,
inventoried, with ready access
--All provisions except fresh provisions should be onboard
--Each yacht should have had its fuel tanks OPENED AND
CLEANED within 30 days of arrival at Bahia Mar
--Yacht documentation and registration papers should be
valud through the end of the Med Bound 2007
--Passports for all hands should be valid through the end of
the rally for all crewmembers
--Non-U.S., U.K., Canadian and/or non E.U. crewmembers
should have all required visas
--Each crewmember should have had a physical examination
within 90 days of departure, discussing risk factors below with
their personal physician

REDUNDANCY

The most capable ocean-crossing yachts are those with built-in
redundancy. That is, if one critical system or piece of equipment
malfunctions or fails, there's an alternative way to keep the system
online or bypass it and complete the voyage. The captain should
carefully consider each critical system aboard and ask, "What would
we do if this system failed 1,000 miles from port?" then formulate a
plan for dealing with such failuresunderway repairs, spares,
temporary jury rigs, backup systems, or other solutions. Among the
systems to consider are:

--Steering systems (emergency steering)
--Bilge pumps
--Autopilots
--Running lights
--Fuel system including tanks, filters, fuel lines, and

other plumbing
--Battery charging
--Fresh water tanks, plumbing, pumps and watermaker
--Other electronics including GPS, radar, VHF and satellite
communications
--A minimum of two FIXED VHF radios, each with its own
antenna, is strongly recommended
--Ability to send and receive e-mail at sea is strongly
recommended
--Heads and associated plumbing
--Generator(s)
--Inverter(s)
--Refrigeration and freezers
--Galley range and oven
