SR 520 Bridge Replacement and HOV Program
Driver alert: SR 520 floating bridge closed this weekend, Aug. 26-29
Drivers should plan ahead for heavy congestion this weekend, Aug. 26-29, when Eastside construction will completely close the SR 520 floating bridge and highway from I-405 to Montlake Boulevard in Seattle.
During the closure, crews will construct a fish-passage culvert east of 84th Avenue Northeast, and complete other time-sensitive construction activities such as installing barrier and striping and repairing potholes. We’ll also build a new work zone in the median near Evergreen Point Road so crews can safely build supports for a future landscaped lid over the highway. Drivers should prepare for a traffic shift when the highway reopens on Monday morning.
Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes, and detour signs will be posted around the corridor. The most up-to-date SR 520 construction information is found through our Eastside project page, where we also have a map of this month’s work (pdf 284 KB).
SR 520 bridge tolling to begin in December
Tolling on the SR 520 bridge across Lake Washington will start in December. Implementing a system that handles 100,000 daily transactions can be challenging and it’s no secret that we’ve had issues getting tolling up and running on the SR 520 bridge. We’ve received valuable input from an expert review panel, an internal audit, and from ongoing testing of the system. The feedback will be used to ensure that all components, including software and hardware, are fully operational before tolling starts.
We appreciate the thousands of drivers who have already set up Good To Go! accounts and we thank them for their patience. December will arrive quickly and we encourage others to set up an account now so they’ll be ready when tolling starts. For more information or to sign up for a Good To Go! account, visit our website.
Crews surveying utilities in Montlake starting Saturday morning
While the floating bridge is closed this weekend, WSDOT engineers plan to dig a series of holes to help locate utilities at the SR 520 and Montlake Boulevard East interchange. Work will begin as early as 6 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 and will end no later than 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28.
During the work, crews will create holes up to 12 inches in diameter in the pavement and then use a vacuum excavator to remove soil and surface material to a depth of up to six feet. Holes will be filled and patched when the work is completed.

Continued progress on pontoon construction project
Update from Aberdeen: Crews have made major progress on the casting basin where we will eventually build SR 520 bridge pontoons. Check out our latest aerial shot of the completed floor of the casting basin.
Visit the pontoon website for more information about the project.
Happy birthday to the bridge!
Happy birthday to the SR 520 floating bridge! The bridge opened Aug. 28, 1963 and it's seen decades of traffic and storms. We're planning to replace it with a safer, more reliable floating bridge and that will open to traffic as soon as December 2014.
