John,

I disagree with you on the password issue.  That password only determines
who YOU are, it does not guarantee who has access to the computer
broadcasting the WiFi signal.  If you are using a PW to connect with a
marina, yeah you are sure who you are connected to but you do not know who
fixes their computer and you do not know which employee operates it on a
daily basis.  And which disgruntled former employees left a little surprise
on that computer.

Either of those guys can install a watch program that transmits all your
keystrokes to the Bad Guys.

Or, a virus can install it for them.

Having a password to connect to WiFi is no guarantee of anything.

But an aircard is different, with that you know you are connected to
Verizon and at least theoretically you are safe.

Ralph, Jim and List,

When using WiFi from other sources, make absolutely certain that it is
password protected.  There are a lot of crooks who clone a marina,
restaurant or store's website.  You go on line using their cloned site and
they are in your computer looking at all your private data!

You would be well advised to buy a Verizon hot spot card - don't know what
the current price is, but then it's only 50.00 per month for 3G or 4G where
ever there is a cell phone signal.
