National Coalition for Literacy Discussion List
View all threadsHouse is debating the “cromnibus” now. Expectations are that it will pass, mostly along party lines. Then the expectation is that the when the bill goes to the Senate, they'll switch the defense funding to a short-term CR as well, and attach language raising the caps for defense and nondefense for fiscal years 2018 and 2019. That keeps the government going via the CR, and then gives them six weeks to write an omnibus bill or FY 2018 with the new levels. The total increase for the two-year deal is reported to be around $300 billion — but parity is gone. The increase for NDD will be less than for defense.
Still: for FY 2-18 anyway, we’re about to get the biggest boost in many years. The pie will for once likely be bigger — and if it is (we’ll have to se), and assuming that there is still a big enough slice for education when they get to the Labor-HHS-Eeducation allocation, there may be a reasonable opportunity for a small increase to adult education funding. So again, to repeat my recommendation from this morning, I advise some targeted advocacy directed at members of the Labor-HHS-Education subcommittee members over the several weeks, after this deal is finalized.

Also, unlikely but still possible the administration could mess this up, especially with some demand related to immigration.

Twitter suggests there is much consternation among House Democrats during the debate — but that’s it from me for now, I need to turn my attention to other things. Check C-SPAN or twitter if you are interested in following the action live!

I would underscore this important point Jeff.
It was made again at the National Skills Summit and if there is any hope for any increase now would be the time. All assuming this does go through!
