John: You get what you pay for and in this case we trained for 5 years
before leaving. The SSB in those days (mid-80's) meant that you needed time to
communicate and of course on long cruises you had the time. You plan as much as
possible to stay out of trouble and not need the SSB for instant communication
if that trouble should occur. My wife and I were lucky and most of our
acquaintances thought we were nuts to do what we did at that time but at least we
have the bragging rights. The use of Ham in those days was equally important
but then again it took time and you could not expect instant gratification if
you got into trouble. Today the systems are better but if you do not take
the time to learn you would be better to go offshore in a convoy (e.g. NAR
2004) in which the other boats have the expertise to guide and offer you help.
The bottom line is if you go by yourself you are advised to be totally self
