You will have to state register the boat whether or not it is documented. The only difference is that, if documented, the boat doesn’t have to show the state registration numbers. You may have to show an annual decal, if your state requires one (Michigan and Wisconsin on the south side of Superior do). It doesn’t hurt to keep the boat documented—not that expensive and it may be useful if you decide to sell later.

We are the process of buying a new (to us) boat. It is currently documented. What are the pros and cons to keeping it documented versus going the state registration route? This boat will be operated ONLY on the American side of Lake Superior.
