Another very useful feature of radar is the "ranging" function. With the
ranging rings turned on, you can easily determine quite accurately your
distance to land or intended destination. (Radar is an acronym for "radio
detection and ranging"). The ranging function gives an accurate
estimation of distance to other vessels, buoys, or anything else of
interest -- as long as it is in radar range.

Also, it is my experience that I often see other vessels on my radar
screen before I see them visually, even in broad daylight. The screen
gives a 360 degree analysis of what is out there without having to
continually crane my neck 360.
