Colleagues,

You may have seen or heard about a warning that is circulating on social media about people who are posing as employees of the "Department of Home Affairs," going door to door saying that they are checking IDs for the Census, and then committing theft and other crimes at the homes where people answer the door.

This warning is a hoax. No one is actually doing this. The warning originated from an IP address overseas.

Please see the Census Bureau's https://2020census.gov/en/news-events/rumors/home-affairs-hoax.html The Bureau says,

The truth is, census employees are in neighborhoods across the
country as they prepare for next year's census. However, census
employees are not asking the public for any identification. Furthermore,
it should be noted that the United States does not have a Department of
Home Affairs.
The Census Bureau has a https://2020census.gov/en/news-events/rumors.html dedicated to addressing rumors and hoaxes connected to the Census. You can use it to report rumors that you may have heard.
