A new 7081 arrived this week and is making itself at home. It seems to be
working normally, passes the Self Test, and I am able to communicate with
it via the RS232 interface. I down loaded the CALDUMP and archived the
data. The firmware is a DC version on this SN 000660 unit (displays VDC
BSW 17 Ma 85 13 17 via the RS232 when Initialise is selected) as opposed
to a DD version on my SN 001523 unit (displays VDD BSW 8 De 86 8 50).
I have archived IC430, IC415, IC414, IC413, IC412, and IC803 from both
versions if anyone needs them. I think the DD version is already on the
web at a couple of locations.
Now, a couple of observations and questions.
- The CALDUMP revealed a Zener Current Token Value of 103. The
sticker on the back corner of PCB 5 says HC/20/27. 103. The Zener Current
Token Value appears at the same location on my other 7081.
- The Cal Key that I have, sent to me by another list member, that
is used to switch from Norm to CAL to be able to read the CALDUMP and
calibrate the meter, fits this new meter. That makes maybe 5 meters that
have worked with this same key. If anyone needs a copy of the key for their
meter, let me know.
- When the input is shorted, I see about 0.15 uV. When reading my
Fluke 731B, I see about 10.000770 volts while my other 7081 (Cald by Ametek
in October) shows about 10.000030 volts. I think this means the new guy
needs to be calibrated.
- B1, the battery on PCB 3, a Tadarian TL-2150, ½ AA, 3.4 Volt
battery, reads 0.016 volts. That sounds dead to me and probably means I can
power down the meter, remove and replace the battery with no loss of data.
- B401, the rechargeable battery on PCB 14, a Varta 3.6 V, 100 mAH, 3
pin battery (two + pins, one pin), measures 4.368 VDC with power on and
0.993 VDC with power off. That sounds like it needs to be replaced.
However, I am suspicious that if I remove it with power off, calibration
constants will be lost. Is that correct? If not, is there a specific set
of steps to do to recover from the battery replacement?
- The meter is missing the feet and the bail. Might anyone have
some spares?
The meter is quite clean inside, date codes are mid to late 84 and the
firmware chips appear to be updated. I will plan to update it further to
the DD version.
Any other suggestions or advice appreciated. It looks like it will be a
good addition to the bench.
Thanks,
Joe

Fabio,
I don't know if it would work with the 7061 or not. I originally thought
that it was unique to the meter but this key has worked on every 7081 it has
been tried on.
I would be happy to send you a copy to see if it works if you can give me
the specifics of how to send it to you. I have mailed them to folks in the
US taped to a 3x5 card and wrapped in a sheet of paper in a regular envelope
with a standard 1st class stamp.
If the key works, you can be the 'distributor' of keys for the EU :^).

It would not surprise me that the key work also on the 7061,
the keyswitch can be esily tapered with a flat blade :)
I didn't notice that you are in US.
Is there is anybody willing to send the key to me in
italy from europe ?
It will cost much less than from usa.
There are also some 7061 owners in this list,
let me know, if I have no luck I'll contact
you Joe and will be happy to pass the key
around.

Just checked, it is less than I thought for regular mail:
from It to US:
priority (regular) mail less than 50grams 3,3euro less than 20grams 1,6euro
registered mail <50grams 7,3euro <20grams 8euro
The delivery times from us to it can be huge,
in the 4weeks range or more, italian post can be reasonable for
big and costly packages but VERY slow with small regular
post, the problem is in the customs offices.

Well, I made some 'scans' of the key and can send that to you. If you can
find a 'blank' that will fit your lock, you can 'file' the 'blank' to become
the key.
If you think that would help.
The original key is by MICRO SWITCH USA and it was made in Canada. The
'blank' for that key appears to have been an HV61 and the number on the key
is 601. Might also be something you could order from MICRO SWITCH.
In the US, the 'blank' that would fit the lock was a Y6 and I had several of
them 'cut' to match the original key that I have been sending to folks that
requested one.
Happy to send you one if you like. Only requirement is that you report back
when it arrives and if it works or not.
Joe

It would not surprise me that the key work also on the 7061,
the keyswitch can be esily tapered with a flat blade :)
I didn't notice that you are in US.
Is there is anybody willing to send the key to me in
italy from europe ?
It will cost much less than from usa.
There are also some 7061 owners in this list,
let me know, if I have no luck I'll contact
you Joe and will be happy to pass the key
around.

Fabio,
I don't know if it would work with the 7061 or not. I originally thought
that it was unique to the meter but this key has worked on every 7081 it
been tried on.
I would be happy to send you a copy to see if it works if you can give me
the specifics of how to send it to you. I have mailed them to folks in
US taped to a 3x5 card and wrapped in a sheet of paper in a regular
with a standard 1st class stamp.
If the key works, you can be the 'distributor' of keys for the EU :^).

- The 'Cal Key' that I have, sent to me by another list member, that
is used to switch from Norm to CAL to be able to read the CALDUMP and
calibrate the meter, fits this new meter. That makes maybe 5 meters
have worked with this same key. If anyone needs a copy of the key for
and follow the instructions there.

If you have the scans on the pc you can send to my email,
if I have success in finding the blanks and make
it work I can pass the key here in eu.
Fabio.
