ISABEL LOSSES TOTAL MORE THAN $150 MILLION
Losses to recreational boats from Hurricane Isabel (not including
marinas, other infrastructure or commercial vessels) will total more
than $150 million, reports Boat Owners Association of The United
States. Much of the damage occurred in the upper reaches of the
Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River watersheds, far from the storm's
North Carolina landfall.
"Our catastrophe response team is reporting quite a few pockets of
severe damage to recreational boats," said Carroll Robertson,
vice-president, marine insurance. "The surprise in this storm was the
severity of storm surge throughout the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac
River, in spite of the storm's landfall far to the south, and its
subsequent track inland."
"Boaters who took advantage of the long lead time before Isabel hit
and made hurricane preparations by either removing their boat, or
adding extra lines, chafe protection, reducing windage and buttoning
up tightly, generally fared OK," adds Robertson.
In the upper Chesapeake and Potomac, a combination of wind driven
storm surge and high tide was exacerbated by run off of rainfall,
catching many unprepared with record setting high water. Most of the
damaged vessels were left in boatlifts or in slips to weather the
storm. The north and west sides of the Chesapeake Bay were
particularly hard hit.
BoatU.S., aka Boat Owners Association of The United States, is the
nation's leading advocate for recreational boaters and provides its
550,000 members with a wide array of consumer services.

END OF AN ERA AT WILLARD
Willard Marine, the oldest manufacturer of trawler yachts in the
U.S., has ended production of its recreational vessels. The Anaheim,
California, company will focus on military and commercial markets.
Willard is the biggest producer of boats for the U.S. military--a
business that is booming post 9/11.
"We have put the tooling for the Willard 30 Pilothouse and Flybridge
Sedan and the Willard 40 Pilothouse and Flybridge Sedan for sale,"
said Patrick Gerety, whose involvement at Willard ended August 30 .
"These are very capable open-ocean passagemakers. We expect to find
someone who will purchase the tooling for these models and keep them
in production."
There is no question Willards are capable passagemakers. The problem
that afflicted the make in recent years was that the boats looked
dated. Styling and finish were given a makeover, but new pricing
found few takers among consumers.
Willard Marine was founded in 1957 to build custom fiberglass yachts.
Its first trawler yacht, the Willard 36, was launched in 1961--three
years before the first Grand Banks, 10 years before the first Marine
Trader, and 28 years before the first Nordhavn.

NORDHAVN RALLY TO START FROM FORT LAUDERDALE
Pacific Asian Enterprises has received applications from close to 80
owners of trawler interested in participating in the Nordhavn
Atlantic Rally, the first trans-Atlantic rally for oceangoing
powerboats that will take place next summer.
PAE, builder of Nordhavn, has received 78 applications: 54 from
Nordhavn owners and 24 from owners of vessels built by other
manufacturers. Many have expressed an interest in using the rally as
the first step for extended cruising in the Mediterranean and
elsewhere. A final determination is still to be made about the number
of boats that will be accepted for the event.
The three-leg, 3,800-mile cruising adventure is slated to begin with
a fleet rendezvous on May 10, 2004, at Bahia Mar Marina in Fort
Lauderdale. Originally, the rally was to have started in Newport,
Rhode Island, but a large number of the prospective participants
preferred a Florida departure.
Weather permitting, the fleet will depart on May 17 for Bermuda and
then the Azores with the finish planned for Gibraltar in time for a
Fourth of July celebration cum rally finale.
