Visitors:
We thank today's observers for their efforts and those interested in the
ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level
of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The
2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe
precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
Today was overcast with a light to moderate wind from the south. The
temperature did not rise above 0c. Snow arrived at midday and the
visibility decreased.
Raptor Observations:
Only 6 Red-tailed Hawks passed the tower today. No other raptors were
observed migrating.
Non-raptor Observations:
Numbers of ducks generally remain stable with 13 species seen including
Bufflehead (55), Hooded Merganser (35) with males displaying and Common
Goldeneye (4) on the lake. One female Common Goldeneye came onto the marsh
to preen. A single Great Egret lingers and a single Sandhill Crane flew
over the Tower. A lighter wind resulted in more songbirds being seen today,
including 4 species of sparrow. A single Ruby-crowned Kinglet was seen
amongst the bushes around the tower. The list is at
https://ebird.org/checklist/S98161291
Predictions:
Tomorrow is forecast to be overcast in the morning, with possible snow
showers at midday, then clearing. Temperatures remain low with wind
moderate from the west. It is likely that there will be few raptors
migrating, but hopefully we will see more than today!
