Monthly Electronic Newsletter of the Newfoundland Club of America

August 2013

Dear Christopher,

Summer is winding down, and across the country the dogs and handlers who
have been working hard training for water tests are demonstrating the fruits
of their labors. In many areas these events draw large crowds of spectators
and media attention. You can see lots of these reports online via the

If you have the chance to observe or, better yet, participate in a water
test, you should definitely take advantage of the opportunity. Seeing our
Newfoundlands demonstrate their working instinct and perform the tasks they
have been bred for centuries to do is an event not to be missed. Check the

Nominations Sought for Good Sportsmanship Award

The NCA Good Sportsmanship award is an award specifically designated to
honor those members whose contributions are vital to the success of any dog
club. It is presented to honor a club member who competes fairly and works
for the advancement of the sport and the club without regard to personal
honors. Only one medal per year is available to a club, so to be honored by
a club as large as the NCA is indeed an honor.
Each year the membership is solicited to recommend individuals for
consideration. The Board makes the final decision based on input from the
membership. Members should submit names for consideration to

AKC Debuts new title for Responsible Dog Owners

http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs151/1101851326832/img/207.jpg The AKC is
launching an advanced Canine Good Citizen title called the  AKC Community
Canine-  The "CGCA" Title. AKC Community Canine is the advanced level of
AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program. As with CGC, AKC Community Canine
has a 10-step test of skills that dogs must pass to earn the official AKC
Community Canine title. This is a title that appears on the dog's title
record at AKC. All skills on the test are tested on leash. The AKC Community
Canine (CGCA) test may be done in a class, at shows, in pet stores or in the
community. When the test is administered in community settings such as at a
business or special event, evaluators must have the necessary approval of
the business owners, etc.
While Canine Good Citizen tests are simulations of real world skills, (e.g.,
dog/handler walks through a "crowd" of evaluators in a ring), the goal of
AKC Community Canine is to test the dog's skills in a natural setting. For
example, rather than the dog being tested in a ring, in AKC Community
Canine, the "walks through a crowd" test item will involve the dog walking
through a real crowd at a dog show, on a busy sidewalk, in a therapy dog
setting, or at a training club.

"The Saint Bernard shares with the Newfoundland the honor of being the only
two breeds of dogs whose special mission and characteristics are the saving
of life, in contradiction to all other breeds which more or less, lie in the
direction of destruction." (Show Dogs)

Newfoundland art at the Kennel Club by Nick Waters

http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs151/1101851326832/img/208.jpg Few breeds
of dog have such a fascinating and romantic background as the Newfoundland.
Even its size commands attention. Immortalised in literature by Lord Byron
and J M Barrie, in art by Sir Edwin Landseer, companion and work horse for
man as he explored new boundaries, and the hero in countless stories of
bravery and determination that enthralled Victorian children.  It is
against such a background that the Kennel Club Art Gallery stages its latest
exhibition, 'The Newfoundland: An Exhibition of Art and History Portraying
this Noble, Loyal Breed'. -

One of the highlights of the 2013 International Assistance Dog week

(August 4-10 2013) was the announcement of a new study to explore the role
of assistance dogs in the workplace. A year-long awareness and information
gathering effort will include interviews with both employers and experienced
assistance dog teams (employees paired with assistance dogs) to move this
never-before-researched area into the mainstream of employment policies and
practice. Findings will be disseminated widely to increase employment
success among those with disabilities and provide answers to employers
inexperienced in accommodating assistance dog teams.

Wilderness Search and Rescue dogs, who use their air scenting or tracking

abilities to locate missing persons, typically in a non-urban setting, will
now be recognized by the American Kennel ClubR (AKCR) with the new SAR-W
title. The AKC already acknowledges dogs that are FEMA or State Urban Search
and Rescue (SUSAR) certified as Urban Search and Rescue Dogs.

Within the field of Wilderness Search and Rescue there are dogs that
specialize in tracking, trailing, air scent, water and avalanche search and
rescue.

The handlers of Wilderness Search and Rescue dogs that have been deployed on
at least five SAR missions and that have been certified by an AKC recognized
SAR certification organization may request a title by downloading and
completing this form. The dog must be AKC registered or enrolled in the AKC
Canine Partners program. The handler is required to submit the dog's SAR
certification document and documentation verifying the dog's deployments.
For more information please contact Lisa Carroll at 919-816-3900 or
performanceevents@akc.org.

As the days grow shorter and the weather turns cooler, remember it's time to

Newfoundland Club of America

Your NCA Board of Directors recognizes the value and prevalence of social
networking systems, such as FacebookT, email lists, and blogs. Sometimes the
rise of this entirely new class of communication has been accompanied by
what has come to be viewed as cyber-harassment. Those engaged in
cyber-harassment post negative comments and half or fabricated truths, often
in a sarcastic manner, about individuals who cannot defend themselves.
Members of the Newfoundland Club of America should consider social
networking communication as public and, as such, understand that their
comments reflect on themselves and the NCA. Members should consider
carefully what and how they write and are encouraged to stress positive
aspects of education rather than negative or sarcastic comments about
owners, breeders, and/or Newfoundland fanciers.

In many areas these events draw large crowds of spectators and media attention. It is presented to honor a club member who competes fairly and works for the advancement of the sport and the club without regard to personal honors. Only one medal per year is available to a club, so to be honored by a club as large as the NCA is indeed an honor. Each year the membership is solicited to recommend individuals for consideration. The Board makes the final decision based on input from the membership. Members should submit names for consideration to AKC Debuts new title for Responsible Dog Owners <http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs151/1101851326832/img/207.jpg> The AKC is launching an advanced Canine Good Citizen title called the AKC Community Canine- The "CGCA" Title. AKC Community Canine is the advanced level of AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program. As with CGC, AKC Community Canine has a 10-step test of skills that dogs must pass to earn the official AKC Community Canine title. This is a title that appears on the dog's title record at AKC. All skills on the test are tested on leash. The AKC Community Canine (CGCA) test may be done in a class, at shows, in pet stores or in the community. When the test is administered in community settings such as at a business or special event, evaluators must have the necessary approval of the business owners, etc. While Canine Good Citizen tests are simulations of real world skills, (e.g., dog/handler walks through a "crowd" of evaluators in a ring), the goal of AKC Community Canine is to test the dog's skills in a natural setting. For example, rather than the dog being tested in a ring, in AKC Community Canine, the "walks through a crowd" test item will involve the dog walking through a real crowd at a dog show, on a busy sidewalk, in a therapy dog setting, or at a training club. (Show Dogs) Newfoundland art at the Kennel Club by Nick Waters <http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs151/1101851326832/img/208.jpg> Few breeds of dog have such a fascinating and romantic background as the Newfoundland. Even its size commands attention. Immortalised in literature by Lord Byron and J M Barrie, in art by Sir Edwin Landseer, companion and work horse for man as he explored new boundaries, and the hero in countless stories of bravery and determination that enthralled Victorian children. It is against such a background that the Kennel Club Art Gallery stages its latest exhibition, 'The Newfoundland: An Exhibition of Art and History Portraying this Noble, Loyal Breed'. - <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hmzhx0n3FexpKCaf2MTW4VbAfVGmHB1USXCHFhr7LgXF miiPDthgBmLL6xJ3tMoKQVPUF5i0OrVqj06aQdQ2xbvsn3H83N2Purx98sK4BbxCsi2PyBFA-vPy lQf5kmFTvPDz2dBl_RWK1uhr13iWUF0nbvW7GxM8wYLSwmECAAtkhlt4acCADg==> Read More International Assistance Dog Week <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hmzhx0n3Fex67rEq_gYN0yw-PGe0ya-mtF3VfWkObekB S98B8K_ksfY2kJAoRQu0Viqs2FUPsElnlFsAi-kyNpjKlw7qfwcX1Rzq0U2hbI_0KrZxWgzb8g== > <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hmzhx0n3Fex67rEq_gYN0yw-PGe0ya-mtF3VfWkObekB S98B8K_ksfY2kJAoRQu0Viqs2FUPsElnlFsAi-kyNpjKlw7qfwcX1Rzq0U2hbI_0KrZxWgzb8g== > servicedog <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hmzhx0n3Fex67rEq_gYN0yw-PGe0ya-mtF3VfWkObekB S98B8K_ksfY2kJAoRQu0Viqs2FUPsElnlFsAi-kyNpjKlw7qfwcX1Rzq0U2hbI_0KrZxWgzb8g== > One of the highlights of the 2013 International Assistance Dog week (August 4-10 2013) was the announcement of a new study to explore the role of assistance dogs in the workplace. A year-long awareness and information gathering effort will include interviews with both employers and experienced assistance dog teams (employees paired with assistance dogs) to move this never-before-researched area into the mainstream of employment policies and practice. Findings will be disseminated widely to increase employment success among those with disabilities and provide answers to employers inexperienced in accommodating assistance dog teams. <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hmzhx0n3FezbMSecld-jOKDZLoLtMBFHAueFlaIaWJTU kUEtHl2agE3p34mkGtxpCDRu440xnHFWCFY_C5kSlo5oFP-RzPsEW5h3niR96fB1f3k4LuG9X5h5 T1keFvU1nMTl0S5MTROZu85sJjC7we2VaI7VqEBFGd0Jmt2UFf0LpJQA-1IFz7WjGV6ylwC7somp Ruj0EcQRJJjR0kS6igOvk6eYORA5NcAL1wMa5MhuwDY9sVatM6TGTrHfzb3Vtbyu6BIqshFSRpjz DHLjjuEr2h3oLHry9gWwb7_5hWo0YyfM18Y6tVmJYNShJT4p7sUbuC9vXGc=> READ MORE AKC Honors Canine Heroes With New Wilderness Search And Rescue Title <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hmzhx0n3Fex67rEq_gYN0yw-PGe0ya-mtF3VfWkObekB S98B8K_ksfY2kJAoRQu0Viqs2FUPsElnlFsAi-kyNpjKlw7qfwcX1Rzq0U2hbI_0KrZxWgzb8g== > <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hmzhx0n3Fex67rEq_gYN0yw-PGe0ya-mtF3VfWkObekB S98B8K_ksfY2kJAoRQu0Viqs2FUPsElnlFsAi-kyNpjKlw7qfwcX1Rzq0U2hbI_0KrZxWgzb8g== > sar <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hmzhx0n3Fex67rEq_gYN0yw-PGe0ya-mtF3VfWkObekB S98B8K_ksfY2kJAoRQu0Viqs2FUPsElnlFsAi-kyNpjKlw7qfwcX1Rzq0U2hbI_0KrZxWgzb8g== > Wilderness Search and Rescue dogs, who use their air scenting or tracking abilities to locate missing persons, typically in a non-urban setting, will now be recognized by the American Kennel ClubR (AKCR) with the new SAR-W title. The AKC already acknowledges dogs that are FEMA or State Urban Search and Rescue (SUSAR) certified as Urban Search and Rescue Dogs. Within the field of Wilderness Search and Rescue there are dogs that specialize in tracking, trailing, air scent, water and avalanche search and rescue. The handlers of Wilderness Search and Rescue dogs that have been deployed on at least five SAR missions and that have been certified by an AKC recognized SAR certification organization may request a title by downloading and completing this form. The dog must be AKC registered or enrolled in the AKC Canine Partners program. Finally, Christopher As the days grow shorter and the weather turns cooler, remember it's time to get out the carts and harnesses and hook up those Newfies -- whether it's just for fun (cleaning up the yard and hauling leaves, pumpkin picking, or participating in a parade) or preparing for a draft test, If you're new to draft work, try to attend a regional club draft test or a club fun day. You'll meet plenty of people there who can help you get started. You can also get lots of information, along with video seminars on getting started in <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hmzhx0n3Fey6Y0Pb8cZyXlNg7DbpKJxyo3OLF_33cQjv 0f7efgIVj5eSkrwv1lj4XC9wfE-FLzrUtJynBjUIIk1nnLdMu4jX6Da6mengJ1-jag7PtWKPHMAT A6qtPKNwLP0IRXQt7RUfkDSVG7jVctOKirQbbTC_> Draft work from the NCA website. Second notices for late payment of NCA membership dues are going out soon, if you have forgotten your renewal, please get it in to <mailto:cuddyBOD@nycap.rr.com> Mary Lou Cuddy as soon as possible for inclusion in the member Directory. Also if you have had a change of address, phone or email please let <mailto:cuddyBOD@nycap.rr.com> Mary Lou know so that the Directory will have your information listed correctly. We have several committees currently looking for new members. If you would like to volunteer to serve on an NCA committee please contact <mailto:ncabod2ndvp@live.com> Lynn Anderson with a brief bio of your Newf and/or dog experience along with any other skills or expertise from outside the dog world. Right now we are looking for volunteers for the AKC Breed Column Committee and the Technical Resource Advisory Committee in particular. Sometimes the rise of this entirely new class of communication has been accompanied by what has come to be viewed as cyber-harassment. Those engaged in cyber-harassment post negative comments and half or fabricated truths, often in a sarcastic manner, about individuals who cannot defend themselves. Members of the Newfoundland Club of America should consider social networking communication as public and, as such, understand that their comments reflect on themselves and the NCA. Members should consider carefully what and how they write and are encouraged to stress positive aspects of education rather than negative or sarcastic comments about owners, breeders, and/or Newfoundland fanciers.
