Just an anecdote about New Zealand... I have a lifetime friend, Doug,
who has taught all over the world, and who went to NZ to teach... He
wound up marrying a local girl in NZ... Doug is the typical academic,
liberal grad student... Definitely Democratic Party in his leanings, if
not more socialist than that... He should have fit in famously in NZ...
Unfortunately, he is also american through and through, with the mind
set that he is entitled, nay required, to speak his mind... At various
campus activities he made specific observations of the dichotomy
between the public statements of the Prime Minister and his cronies and
their actions... What he spoke was fact (apparently) but an american
does not publically criticize the PM in NZ (also apparently)...
Anyway, in the summer after their marriage he took his bride on a tour
of countries where he had previously taught; Japan, Asia,
Russia,Siberia, and over the pole to the US to meet his family... Upon
arriving back in NZ on the day before the new school year started,
customs informed him that his visa was cancelled and that he was not
allowed to enter the country... He was turned about face and marched
back upon the plane, whereupon he flew back to the USA by return flight
with no wife, no money to pay for his return flight, and no visa...
With the help of the US State Department the situation was eventually
resolved and he returned to NZ to continue teaching, but says he has
learned his lesson and now has no comment when NZ politics come up...
There is democracy and there is socialism and they are not the same..
