U.S. PIAAC Skills Map is an interactive mapping tool that allows users to
access estimates of adult literacy and numeracy proficiency in all U.S.
states and counties. These estimates are based on data collected in the
three rounds of U.S. PIAAC data collection (in 2012, 2014 and 2017) as well
as data from the American Community Survey (2013-2017). A statistical
technique called small area estimation is used to produce estimates of the
proportion of U.S. adults, ages 16–74, with the lowest levels of
proficiency (at or below Level 1), with middle proficiency (at Level 2),
and with the highest levels of proficiency (at or above Level 3). Also
available in this mapping tool are state and county estimates of average
literacy and numeracy scores (on the PIAAC scale of 0-500). In addition,
the mapping tool provides estimates of the precision of its indicators and
facilitates statistical comparisons among states and counties.
PIAAC is a large-scale international study of the skills of working-age
adults (ages 16–65) in three domains: literacy, numeracy, and digital
problem solving. It also collects extensive information on adults’
education and training, work experience, and other background
characteristics.
