I had PSS put on my last boat with 6-71's. I loved them. One should probably
budget about twice the estimate because they will undoubtedly find
complications during the installation. They have to have virgin shaft to ride on for
one thing and that may involve shortening the fiberglass shaft tubes and they
might even have a problem getting your shafts out of the couplers due to a
previous grounding or something that would cause them to be jammed a little
bit. Just beware. It's not a simple as it sounds.

With good access to the stuffing boxes, i woudln't re invent the wheel.
Just switch to GFO packing.. that stuff is really virtually dripless...

Subject: T&T: Dripless shaft seals
I'm need to change out the shaft packing seals on my boat. I want to have
dripless shaft packing installed. I am looking at PYI Dripless Seals.
Anyone out there with good or bad experience with this brand ?

I have had dripless shaft seals on my last 2 boats over a 15 year period
and have experienced no problems. In fact I threw a fluke off one wheel at
high speed which in turn bent the shaft and broke the strut. It was all
quite violent, lotsa vibration and noise plus some huge gouges in the bottom
of the boat. The shaft seal never leaked a drop. The seal was not even
replaced as part of the final repair, I felt it proved it's worth to stay
aboard.
The boats had seals of different manufacture.
I can imagine that total failure of this type seal could require a "bigger
is better" b/pump that we have been hashing over, I have 6 of them and lotsa
batteries.
