Subject: Community Workshop on Urban Gardening in Contaminated Soil - March 14th @ Point Ruston
Many of you have heard that Tacoma/Pierce County has a history of contaminated soils...ever wondered what that means for you if you are interested in growing vegetables in your yard or in a community garden?
Come to a community workshop to get your questions answered!
Scientists from Kansas State University have been doing a study under an EPA 'Brownfields to Gardens' grant to evaluate uptake of contaminants (with an emphasis on heavy metals) by food crops grown on brownfields sites slated for community gardens. They have several test sites nation-wide where food was grown over a 2-year growing period.
Based on the results, they have developed and are recommending best management practices for urban gardeners. For the workshop, they will share with us the results from their Tacoma site, and also answer any questions from the community regarding brownfields, etc.
This exciting event will be:
March 14th, 6:30pm - 8pm
It will be hosted on the Ferry at Point Ruston - directions and more information coming soon.
Space is limited - email me at Kristenm@piercecountycd.orgmailto:Kristenm@piercecountycd.org to reserve a spot.
Let me know if you have any questions! Hope to see you there,
