I am unaware of any federal or state requirement for
anyone over the age of 21 to have any qualification
whatsoever to skipper a private vessel in US waters.

From: "Roger Bingham" rbingham@tele2.fr

I am 57, British, retired and living with my wife in France for the last 4
years

My boating background includes inland waterways in UK and Europe, coastal
sailing, RIBs and various other small boats.

Our plan for the future is to sell our house, buy a boat (power cat or
trawler yacht) in USA and cruise there for about 5 years before returning

to

Europe to carry on cruising.

I am looking at Transcat 42, Maryland 37 and the new Lagoon Power 44 as

well

as Selene 43 and Nordhavn 43 Trawler Yachts

It is not easy finding relevant information from US Government Department
websites regarding necessary qualifications as skipper or for using VHF /
SSB etc

Any information or advice from anyone would be welcome.

Welcome aboard the Power Catamaran List, Roger!

I'm sure you'll find a lot of people here who will be helpful in your
plans to cross to this side of the pond for cruising.

Keep us posted on your search for the right boat for you and yours.
