[Ontbirds] South Peel Christmas Bird Count Preliminary Results

MC

Sun, Dec 15, 2019 5:08 AM

Possibly the most unpleasant weather ever on a South Peel CBC, rain did
not let up the entire day.

Numbers aren't available but the overall number will be lower than
average despite abnormal concentrations of geese away from the lake with
no observed movement between lake and field. Overall diversity currently
stands at 67 well below our ten year average of 78 but considerably
better than the 57 species counted in 2007 a count that included the QEW
being shut down due to snow.

No warblers were reported anywhere in the count including Sedgewick
Woods. Highlights are locally significant and include a Red-shouldered
Hawk photographed on possibly the last remain TV antenna in Mississauga
https://ebird.org/canada/checklist/S62314607 a first since 1990,
Ruby-crowned Kinglet at Sedgewick, a white phase Snow Goose at Forth
Line and Lower Base Road (east of Bronte Road and north of Hwy 407),
Long-eared Owl were found in Mississauga (no details) and an Evening
Grosbeak was heard near MacEwan House in Riverwood Conservancy (north
and west of Burnamthorpe and Creditview Road in Mississauaga)
