Note, while others have been noting the lower numbers of Common Nighthawks than usual, I've had my usual passage of a dozen or two here and there each evening since the 20th or so. When I have a big night, it's most often between the 28th and 31st of the month and they were right on schedule. There could have been far more than 500 but at some point they began milling around reminiscent of Broad-winged Hawks when kettling but not the peeling off that Paul Carrier noted recently and I could no longer tell when or if new birds were present. This to me is one of the real wonders of nature that occurs every year during such a relatively small window of time.
