Gig Harbor artist wins Best of Show award in Peninsula Art League’s annual Open Show

Joan Teed’s oil painting “Alex” was selected from 108 entries

GIG HARBOR — An oil painting of a young woman eating a dish of pasta won the coveted Best of Show ribbon and a cash prize in Peninsula Art League’s 17th annual Open Show. The painting by Gig Harbor resident Joan Teed was selected from among 108 artworks by artists from across the country by show juror Lorraine Watry. Watry is a well-known watercolorist from Colorado. The show continues at the Harbor History Museum through Nov. 1.

More than 200 entries were submitted to the show. Most of the entries came from Puget Sound-area artists, but artists from as far away as Alaska, California and Pennsylvania also submitted artworks, according to Open Show chair Carlene Salazar. Watry selected the 108 paintings on display in the show.

Other cash prizes went to Lynda Lindner — first place 2D; Ned Block — first place 3D; Stephen Henry — first place photography. Marilyn Bower and Michael Ferguson received honorable mention prizes.

In addition, the Gig Harbor Arts Commission selected three artworks for Commissioners’ Choice awards.  Mary Stewart, Andrew Feuk and Karen Petrillose were Commissioners’ Choice recipients.

Ten other artists received non-cash awards from local businesses.

A People’s Choice award will be announced on Nov. 1.
