What was the source of the leak and what did you do to fix it?

Thank you,
Ron

| 1. The Naiads started leaking oil (leak == 1 quart/hour) and
| until we found the problem we ran with no stabilization for
| over 24 hours.

Brian ask:
Do these Naiad stabilizers experience more than their share of problems??
Inquisitive as I do not know much about stabilizers having been involved
principly with sailing craft, and multihull ones at that.

I wrote in another forum about an electrical problem with them that caused
much concern:

I think that the answer lies in statistics. I'm guessing that Naiad has sold
the most stabilizers in comparison to AmerTrac, Wesmar, and Gyro Gale. I
have to wonder though, are the ones for the modal size of vessel on this
list made for prolonged continuous duty? Of course, Naiad could ask if we
trawler owners assiduously follow their maintenance schedule. I must confess
that I have not approached my hydraulic thruster and Naiad stabilizers for
fear of finding something wrong. I really should check fluid levels though.
I do know to check the stabilizer mechanisms for leaks, but the port one is
often neglected. I need a small and slender female, preferably a gymnast or
ballerina (RN a plus) to check the port side and the side of the generator
against the hull . {;^)) actually {:^|)

My 1970 Willard 36 has original Vosper Thornycroft
Stabilizers, I believe is a forerunner to Naiad. The
electrical contacts are rather noisy, and there is a
distinct knock to them (worn bushing I suppose), but
they have worked for 35 years - and several trips to
Mexico and Florida from California with previous
owners.
