[Younglawyers] New Attorney

Hello fellow young lawyers:

I recently started working for Montgomery County in the finance and
procurement division.  I was hired as a sort of "utility infielder" to
cover areas where the division needs extra hands on deck.  So I spend a
lot of time jumping from case to case.  Just starting out, I think it is
a good thing to be flexible to the County's needs because it allows me
to dip my toes in several different pools and try new areas of the law.
I was wondering if anyone else out there was hired under similar
circumstances, and how they felt about it.  It also might be helpful to
set up monthly phone calls like the other IMLA listservs have to talk
about issues for young attorneys.  It would be nice to connect with
other attorneys at the same stage in their careers.

Best,

Hello All,

That "utility infielder" analogy is actually perfect and is what drew me into the field to begin with. When I graduated from law school it was right at the beginning of the economic downturn and I did not want to find myself doing bankruptcies day-in and day-out. I took a job as the Assistant City Attorney in Brunswick, Georgia. It was a town I had only briefly been to one time and my nearest loose friend was over an hour away, my nearest family and good friends were about 5 hours away. Honestly, it was the best decision I ever made. The job and living in a small town were both like being a "utility infielder" as you say Tagg.

Being in the position where I was forced to learn about many different types of law made me a much better attorney and was directly responsible in my ability to get my current job with the Georgia Municipal Association. Whenever I speak to law students now I tell them that sometimes they should take that risk and work in the place that gives them a broader base as their first job because it will make them more marketable and teach them more, quicker.

I like the idea of having a monthly call. One thing I think many young attorneys go through is job transition and with that the often requisite location transition. It might be something we could share insights on about how to adjust to certain situations. Sometimes moving to a new town, finding a new place to live, adjusting to a new job, and trying to find your place in the new community can be a little overwhelming.
