Hi CITASA friends,

I'm looking forward to seeing you all at ASA. I just wanted to pass along an ad I'm just putting out...if you know of any strong graduate students at ASA, please let me know or have them contact me.

Sincerely,

James

Computational Social Science Post-Doc

We seek outstanding candidates for NSF-funded post-doctoral positions in computational social science at the University of Chicago. Working under the supervision of James Evans, post-docs will explore cutting-edge problems in social science methodology: the creation and fielding of interactive, intelligent surveys; the modeling of social and cultural influence; and automated methods for creating and decomposing knowledge networks.

Positions will be associated with the Sociology Department and Knowledge Lab (knowledgelab.org) in the Computation Institute (www.ci.uchicago.edu) at the University of Chicago (www.uchicago.edu). Positions are for 2-3 years, contingent on annual reappointment.

Our aim is to apply network, machine learning, graphical models and matrix methods to (one of) three broad challenges: (1) the creation of interactive surveys and online “games” for information gathering in the social sciences; (2) modeling the influence in cultural and intellectual fields of endeavor; (3) using computational methods to extract and partition knowledge networks from large collections of documents.  Applicants are expected to have strong qualifications in quantitative and computational social science and/or machine learning.  They will have the opportunity to work with other post-docs, researchers and students in the social sciences as well as the computational sciences (e.g., machine learning, computational linguistics, applied math).

Minimum qualifications for this position are a PhD or expected PhD in social science (e.g., sociology, economics, political science) or a related field. Candidates with PhDs in statistics, informatics and computer science should apply to a related position in machine learning applied to the social sciences. Women and members of underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

Interested candidates must submit to knowledgelab@ci.uchicago.edu: 1) cover letter, describing your interest in and qualifications for pursuing interdisciplinary research; 2) curriculum vitae (including publications list); 3) contact information for three or more scholars who know your work and are willing to write letters of reference; 4) papers or projects (including software) that reflect your best work.

Positions can begin immediately. Compensation includes a competitive salary and benefits plan and assistance with relocation to Chicago.
