Randy and Carol beachable catamaran

Dear Randy and Carol,
You areB definitelyB looking at the right type of boat. Only a
catamaran could give you this many options. B You did not say whether
you prefer inboards or outboards, or stern drives, nor your target use
and speed range. B We build both outboard and diesel stern drives
version of our Buzzards Bay 34, a fully enclosed pilot house coastal
cruiser. B The hulls draft about 20". B Outboards tilt fully out of the
water, so the draft remaining is just the hulls. B Stern drives will
tilt up, but a portion will still be below the hull. B In sandy
bottoms, this will typically not be a big deal. B Our cats are a
displacement hull shape, but with full sterns, and our speed range is
quite high, we've seen as fast at 44mph. B We are looking at doing a 40
foot version available with outboards and stern drives if your cup of
tea is the fast coastal cruiser.
B
If your interested in straight shaft inboards, there are a number of
vessels out there with full protection to there running gear. B You
will want to have a full skeg running underneath the prop AND rudder,
with the skeg supporting the bottom of the rudder shaft itself. B This
area and design needs to be robust. Remember its not just what the
bottom conditions are like, but the weather as well. B Is there a wind
chop while the tide is dropping, so that the hull could be bouncing as
the tide goes out? B How strong is the current? B These are issues you
will want to think through. B Also, be aware of where your water
pick-ups are, as you will not want these to get clogged with bottom
debris. B At the very least, if you go inboard power, certainly be sure
your sea-water strainers are located for very easy inspection and
cleaning. B As for vessels with this type of protectiion, have a look
at Maine Cat, Malcolm Tennant designs, Schionning, and Endeavor and see
what you think. B Hope this helps. B Feel free to give me a call, and
good luck. B

try the Endeavourcat 44 or 48.  All running gear is fully protected.

They

are built in Clearwater, Florida.

The Endeavours have props, shafts and rudders up in tunnels so

they can sit in the sand without damage. I don't know what prolonged
bottom sitting will do. But because each one is custom built, a boat can
be produced to meet your particular circumstances.
