In this one day workshop, we will cover:

  • Importance of hobby and sideline beekeeping
  • Doing the background work before investing in honeybees and hive
  • Basics of setting up your 1st apiary
  • Fabrication of the hive(s)
  • Getting bees and installing the swarm
  • The need to feed
  • How to monitor your hive and note taking
  • Bee diseases and other challenges
  • Managing honey bees through the seasons
  • Hive products

About the instructor, Rick Samyn:

Rick has been beekeeping for 13 years and earned his beekeeping
certification in 2002 from the Southeaster Beekeeping Association of
Michigan. Rick founded and managed a 40- hive sideliner beekeeping and
urban farm project for the Capuchin Franciscan in Michigan from 1998 to
2006.

In collaboration with the St. Leo Food Connection and L'Arche Farm and
Garden he established the L'Honey Project which is a collaborative venture
with L'Arche to promote sustainable beekeeping and an agricultural cottage
industry with hive and farm field products. He is currently employed by St.
Leo Parish as the Pastoral Assistant for Social Justice.
