Good Morning All:

Our new (to us)boat came equipped with Nobeltec Visual Navigation Suite 6.5
installed on the bridge. A friend has suggested that I upgrade to 7.0. What
would I gain by upgrading versus checking out other navigation programs. I
recall that one member a few weeks ago mentioned free charts from NOAA. Will
Nobeltec read those charts?

I don't mind making an additional investment, but I would like to get the
most bang for the buck!

Thanks for any advice.

Nobeltec does not read ENC charts from NOAA (nor do they intend to). I've
been using Coastal Explorer and it does a very good job of quilting BSB,
IENC and ENC charts. I haven't tried it with the GPS and autopilot yet.

Steve and others,

I have been using Rose Point Navigation Coastal Explorer . All of my
GPS's autopilot's Radar's, Wind,Temp,Depth,Speed,all networked  together
with an onboard WIFI server. So I can have a laptop any place on the boat
and have full control over the boat. The use of the S57 charts have been
great. Brad at Rose point is the best to work with he really knows his
stuff. At most of my displays you can find any and all Nav info you might
need. Now add the versatility on a wireless network and you have a wonderful
setup. I am using a wireless server from Marine wireless we are currently
doing beta testing for them.

Neither Nobeltec 6.5 nor 7.0 will read the NOAA vector charts, nor do they
provide a converter software program.

MaxSea 11 (and earlier versions) will read the new NOAA charts as well as
several other Navigation programs.

The cost of electronic charts for the Great Loop is a lot more than the
navigation software - so choose accordingly.

NOTE - there are currently about 390 vector charts in the NOAA set. This is
a little less than half of the total Great Loop route. Basically the NOAA
charts at present cover the most heavily traveled commercial traffic areas
as a personal first estimate. They are probably one or two years from be
complete by my guess - but what is there is good quality and, of coarse,
very up to date.

Happy boating, John Harris
