I have a friend here in the marina (Blow Boater) who has an Island Packet 38,
in which he installed a Westerbeke 3.8kw, 3600 rpm gen-set two years ago.
This set has failed already and the estimate to repair exceeds $3000.00 so he
desires to replace it. Obvisoulsy, getting only two years from this particular
set has caused him to look for something better.
He is considering an ENTEC 4.2, which is another one of the single cylinder
3600 rpm units and I happened to have had one of these in my previous life as
a blow-boater and was very unhappy with it. Besides being obnoxiously noisy
and vibrating the boat to death, it had a Johnson two stage water pump that
continually gave me problems. Now they may have improved this particular unit
in the ten plus years since I had one, but I do not know.
I mentioned Northern Lights to him, because I believe I have read some
positive stuff on this list about them, but my friend doesn't think they make
any units small enough for his application? I also mentioned the Panda, but
he said he has heard poor comments about those.
Any help on this topic?
Thanks,
Jim Alexander
