Did you both have Nexus cards in addition to the cruising license?

No.  I just had my passport, as did the skipper.  I understand that a
Nexus card can be handy, especially on the west coast around the border
area since the border runs right through the middle of the Gulf
Island/San Juan group.  There is a little hassle involved in getting
one, especially if a person does not live near a city.  Word is that it
can make passing back and forth easier.  In our case, the boat went
south through the US, then cruised in and out of the US Virgin Islands
before returning to Canada via Hudson and the canals so the permit was
almost a necessity.  Nexus cards were not.
