Becky Frehse: Tone Poems

Tone Poems is a mixed media painting and assemblage exhibition that borrows ideas from musical concepts that use descriptive elements to evoke the meaning of a story, memory, or place. Large scale paintings are built upon musical staff lines inscribed into an initial gesso layer to provide a linear, graph-like structure. As a composition develops, it becomes a “score” in which sumptuous color, intricate surface textures, and rhythmic patterns suggest the sensations of a particular theme within a pictorial space. Color harmonies are used to represent changes in pitch or modulations from higher to lower notes for expressive phrases. Other materials such as embroidery thread, strings from cellos or violins, and/or actual musical instrument parts are sometimes embedded in or attached to a surface to create another layer of spatial depth and lyrical detail.

Tone Poems represents our first physical exhibition in the gallery space in a year and a half.  We are also offering the exhibition virtually if you are not able to visit the gallery this fall:

The Helen S. Smith Gallery on Green River College’s main campus was named in honor of the college Foundation’s first President. In addition to being one of the college’s founding members, she was known as a strong advocate for the arts in the community.  The Helen S. Smith Gallery is an academic resource for the Green River campus and regional art community.  Now 50 years and counting, the gallery continues to carry on her legacy as an academic resource to Green River College by presenting compelling and innovative exhibitions featuring emerging and established Northwest Artists throughout the year. The gallery also highlights works by Green River student artists twice annually.
