Project Goals: * Beautify these newspaper boxes and make them more visually engaging to the community. * Celebrate Tacoma's vibrant arts scene and showcase local talent. * Provide a fun and accessible platform for public art. * Raise funds to keep Weekly Volcano sustainable. * People will vote via QR code with donations. Artists will receive 50% of donations for their box minus transaction fees and expenses. Top 3 boxes will received additional prizes (TBA) * As soon as we have a photo of your finished box we will start a social media campaign. The boxes will be featured in the newspaper and on our website. The artists are encouraged to campaign for people to vote for their box. The boxes will be displayed at Art on the Ave July 20th. Voting closes when festival is over. Box Specifications: * The newspaper boxes are made of metal and come in a variety of similar but not identical sizes and shapes. * Each box has five surfaces (front and three sides) and a top, which artists can design creatively. * The upper portion of the front and side panels will require stenciled text: * "Weekly Volcano" * "FREE" ________________________________ Design Guidelines: Acceptable Designs: * Original artwork that reflects the creativity and diversity of Tacoma. * Themes can include local landmarks, community pride, arts and culture, nature, history, or abstract art. * Designs should be colorful, eye-catching, and suitable for outdoor public spaces. Restrictions: * Designs must not include offensive, inappropriate, or divisive content. This includes: * Explicit or violent imagery * Political or religious messaging * Any commercial branding or advertising * Weekly Volcano reserves the right to review and approve all designs before they are painted on the boxes. Weekly Volcano Branding: * As mentioned, all sides (front and all sides) near the upper part must have the words "Weekly Volcano" and "FREE" stenciled on them. Stencils will be provided. ________________________________ Supplies and Materials: To ensure durability and longevity, all artists must use the following types of paint and supplies: Required Materials: 1. Paint Type: * Outdoor-rated enamel or acrylic paint (spray paint or brush-on) that adheres well to metal surfaces and can withstand weather conditions. * Examples include: * Rust-Oleum Protective Enamel * Montana Cans (for spray paint) * Liquitex Professional Heavy Body Acrylics 2. Surface Prep: * Boxes will be provided as-is and may require light cleaning or sanding to ensure paint adherence. * Artists should bring sandpaper (medium grit) and cleaning supplies (e.g., water, mild soap, and rags). 3. Finish/Sealant: * Artists must apply a weatherproof, UV-resistant clear coat over the final design to protect the paint from the elements. Examples include: * Krylon UV-Resistant Clear Spray * Rust-Oleum Clear Protective Enamel 4.
