Where it gets interesting is that I would venture to
further speculate that the total number of passages by sail boats is fairly
static or declining, whereas the number of long-distance trawler passages
each year is rising dramatically.

We tend to hang out with the sailboat crowd, if for no other reason, there are more of them.  Just like trawler folks, they are fun people too.  More and more sailboat owners in that 50's and 60's age bracket are telling me they are serously looking to replace their sailboat with a trawler. They say the spend 80% of the time under power only anyway and their boats are getting to be too much work for them and they are tired of spending long, cold nights in an open cockpit.

I spend a lot of time showing sailboat owners through our boat.  The women get all excitited when I show them the walk in, sit up engine that is 10x12.  The men love the galley up where you can see everything and the separate stall shower with almost unlimited hot water. ;-)  These are things we trawler owners take for granted.

Certainly the publicity about powerboats making open ocean passages (most of them Nordhavns) gives sailboat owners the interest and the confidence that they can be happy in a trawler.  Say what you want about Nordhavn marketing, but the fact of the matter is that the publicity they give to the trawler market benefits all of us directly and indirectly.
