I had to be in Meriden at noontime so I thought I would check out a
few of my old spots in the area when I lived in South Meriden. Nothing
much to report!
Hanover Pond/Quinnipiac River- usual species including many Canada
Geese, Mute Swans, Mallards and Ring Billed Gulls, also 7 Hooded
Mergansers, 3 Common Mergansers and 1 Ringneck drake.
North Farms Res- Canada Geese, Mute Swans, Mallards, Ring Billed
Gulls, 4 Coot and 1 Ringneck Duck dr.
Mackenzie Res (2:00-2:30 pm)- Mallards and 600 + Canada Geese mostly
sleeping on the edge of the ice surrounding the open area in front of
the observation area. Jen and I looked through the geese but couldn't
really see if there were any other species of geese present. The birds
were packed together very tightly which made it difficult to see
anything other than the birds at the edge of the flocks with the
exception of the many yellow neck-collared birds. While we were there
many flocks of geese were flying in, and I am sure there are many
hundred more there at this time. If anyone is in the area, it might be
worth a check to see if the Greater White Front is still around or
maybe a snow goose or two, or maybe that Pink Footed Goose? (That
would be nice).
Lymans Pond/Creek- large group of mallards and a few black ducks in
the small remaining open area of the pond and creek down below Rte
146. There were a few Canada Geese present. But the most interesting
observation was the large flock of Robins filling the trees and bushes
near the pond on the edge of the cornfield and along RTe 146 acrosss
the street. I would estimate there were over 250 birds.
