Erie Canal

Lots of rumors going around about when the Erie Canal will open.  Every
lock operator has his own guess, and they are often wrong.

I just got the word from high up ... NO date has been set ... but the
eastern Erie Canal will probably open this coming Wednesday or Thursday.

The rest of the NY canal system is already open.  A number of boats have
changed their plans and are coming up the Champlain Canal on their way to
Canada, but all the ports on the Champlain still have vacancies every
night.

Waterford is all parked up and likely to stay that way until the Erie
opens, so if you are in a marina on the Hudson that you like, stay there a
few more days.  When the canal opens, there will be a big rush of boats
heading west, and they will take up all the docks on the way.  Unless you
have a fast boat and plan on outrunning the pack, it may be best to not
arrive at Waterford until Friday or later.

Allegria is entering NY harbor at the moment.  We plan to head into Long Island Sound for 3-4 days.  The daytime flood tides don't look favorable until Tuesday.
