Pierce County is also making double-sided printing the new default for all printers capable of duplex printing. "We can make this change to 100 percent recycled paper budget neutral by reducing the amount of paper we use," Executive McCarthy said. "We have saved more than $2 million over the past four years by making smart decisions about our energy use, our fuel use and our purchase of office supplies. Our sustainability efforts save money, limit waste and protect the environment as well as human health." Some of the environmental and economic benefits of policies like this include: * Conserving energy and water. * Reducing air and water pollution. * Reducing greenhouse gas emissions. * Creating jobs in the sustainable products industries. The county's Sustainability Plan includes a number of targets, including having 50 percent of all office supplies contain recycled content.
