In certain WX, it might not be possible (or advisable) to shut the main
engine down. Different engines, due to the location of the dipstick, shape of the
pan, etc., will show erroneous lubeoil level readings or none at all. My Lugger
is equipped with a Murphy 1129 lube level switchgauge. Murphy is one of the
most respected makers of these devices for the commercial marine and other
industries. They make a wide variety; some of which can be configured to add
make-up oil to the engine automatically. I wouldn't recommend doing that in our
application. The 1129 is basically a user-adjustable high/low limit switch,
attached to the engine and connected to the side of the oil pan at the bottom. It
is connected via HP hose and a tee, to the same place as the oil change pump
suction. The top vents to a tapped hole in the side of the lubeoil fill casting
via copper tube. The switch would sound an alarm in the pilothouse if there
were too little or too much lubeoil in the crankcase.
