refrigerator question

Thanks for all the input on the refrigerator question.  Wound up ditching
the Avanti, as we were unable to repair it at a reasonable cost despite
chasing a lot of repair estimates.  For those of you with an Avanti, bear in
mind that although the compressor is under a five year warranty (ours was
within the time frame), Avanti will only send you the new compressor with a
$20 shipping fee. You then have to have someone else install the compressor
and charge it.  The quoted cost from several different sources was about
$350, plus a few wanted an extra $50 to come in first to make sure it was
the compressor. This refrig is available new for around $325-400, with a
claimed 1.5 amp draw, which is why we chose it in the first place.  We wound
up going with a somewhat larger Whirlpool from Sears, with an extended,
country-wide warranty that can be renewed every three years, for less than
$500. Some negatives - bigger power draw (listed at 6.5 amps but haven't had
the chance to check it yet) and takes up a bit more room, but I still think
this is a better choice than the much smaller, much more expensive 12v
Nevercold that we originally installed.  Laura, Narcosis, Long Island NY
