Improving bar code entry of long lists of numbers

Hi all,

UCJEPS needs some help with how they process loans.  We built a repeating group of fields for them to capture their outgoing accession numbers -- accession number(s), quantity, conditions, notes.  Really it's just the accession number they want to barcode into this group, but we added some flexibility.  These accession numbers will not necessarily even be in the database yet, and there is no expectation that we will create relationships to actual objects.

But here's the problem: They want to enter these accession numbers quickly into CSpace using a barcode reader. Right now they have to scan, click the plus icon, click in the field, scan, click the plus icon, click in the field … They often have 100 or more objects on loan.  After you've added about 10 items, the plus icon is off the screen, so you have to add steps to scroll up and down to get to the right place.

The short-term solution will be to add a free text note field where they just barcode in the accession numbers.  The barcode reader is programmed to insert a return, so at least they'll have a list.

What I'd love to see is that the field in question has a listener that hears the return from the barcode reader and clicks the plus icon itself.  Does anyone know if that's possible?  Is that a question for the Yura?

Thanks,
Chris

All,

We are going to get requests for images of specimens we already have
cataloged. If I am in the cataloging record and click on the media
handling tab I would expect the Accession Number and Scientific Name field
top be populated for the cataloging table with my only task to be to
browse to an image and upload it to the server. They are currently blank.
Are there plans to change this?

Regards,

Andrew

Hi Chris,
It seems like it should be completely doable to have it add a new field when it sees a return.

Comrades,

35,440 storage locations have been loaded into "PAHMA Storage Locations"
csid d65c614a-e70e-441b-8855 on pahma.cspace.berkeley.edu.

According to my count, though, there should be 35,446. I know where one of
them went; I'll reconcile the numbers in the morning.

Note that only the basic records have been loaded: the BT/NT relationships
(not currently required for any other processes) will be loaded shortly.

In the meantime, enjoy!

John

Reconciling the counts for the authority:

  1. The input csv file inadvertently contained five blank lines (these were
the result of Description fields in TMS that had nothing but a newline in
    them).

  2. The one I removed myself from the input file was the following:

shortID    status      Display name
sl7352 accepted Kroeber, 20, E (hanging fro

So that accounts for the 6 missing records.

Michael: shall I put this back in manually, verbatim?

Addtionally, I edited two records before allowing them to pass into CSpace:

sl10922 rejected Kroeber, 20, F 23, 4 (  became Kroeber, 20, F 23, 4
sl10930 rejected Kroeber, 20, F 24, 5 (  became Kroeber, 20, F 24, 5

I will attempt to verify that Nothing Bad will happen as a result of these
small changes.

Cheers,

John
