MINKA is excited to announce the installation of Michael Kaniecki’s
monumental and provocative artwork, Tsunami Coming. Using only paper and
India ink, Kaniecki, who lives and works in Tacoma, has transformed the
upper reaches of MINKA with dynamic flights of imagination captured in a
series of undulating pleated sculptures. We invite you to come see for
yourself. Our photos don’t do justice to the scale and impact of this art.

*Artist Statement *

"Inspiration for Tsunami Coming arose out of my concern about the effects
of humans on the natural environment. In it I imagine a wave of aggregated
environmental damage eventually swallowing up the source (us). I fear for
the future of my species and hope we can correct our collective trajectory.
But in the meantime, I’ll continue to assert my existence through the
powerful counter-movement of embodying vital, energized visual
relationships on paper.

"This project is the most recent in a series of explorations in which
rhythmic and repetitive mark-making leads to the revelation of a larger,
subconscious pattern of interwoven graphic relationships. I’ve worked on
paper sheets and rolls for some time, employing a grid format as the
background structure for receiving a virtual flood of unplanned marks and
shapes. With this series, I’ve attempted to explore a continuous
composition, spontaneous and responsive, using limited repeated elements
from beginning to end. To highlight the unexpected and surprise
relationships between elements, I pleated the largest piece of the project
— 53 feet long, India ink on paper — thus allowing perspective from
multiple viewpoints.
"Thank you for viewing. I hope you discover something beautiful in the
work."

MINKA Art + Vintage, 821 Pacific Avenue, Tacoma WA 98402
