Hello Everyone,
My name is Liz and I have a 20 month old female Newf. A week ago she was
playing with my grandson in my home and while "charging" to get a toy got
tangled in a purse handle and apparently twisted her knee. She was limping
on it so within a few days I took her to the vet who said we should watch
it for 10 days and gave me a prescription and instructions on her activity
level etc. She started to do much better and I took her outside with me off
leash yesterday and of course, as most Newfies will do, she bolted and
started running around the yard because she had been on leash for so many
days. Well now she will barely put any weight on her leg at all and my vet
said to give it a couple of days with confinement and rest and call her
Monday to let her know how she's doing. We will decide from there which
direction to go in and she will give me referrals if she feels it's
necessary.
So my question is has anyone in this group ever experienced this or heard
of someone who has with their large breed dog and do you have any good
information or referrals etc that you can give me. I have pet insurance so
I am pretty confident that this will be covered so I am willing to do just
about anything. She's a sweet sweet girl and I I'm broken hearted that this
whole thing happened and I want the best for her.
Thanks!
Liz

It sounds a lot like a cruciate ligament tear, but you may be lucky and she
just has a pulled muscle. Ask your breeder about relatives with this as
some breed lines have a higher incidence than others.

Liz-
Sounds like she reinjured what might have healed on it's own, however, she
should be assessed with xrays at some point if this does not resolve with
rest, and most likely you were given Rimadyl?
I think the University of Minnesota is by far the best place for evaluation
and help with a treatment plan.
We had an 11 month old who went lame running and was found to have severe
hip dyplasia and had bilateral hip replacements 12 weeks apart, with great
results, and another 9 years.
The actual DRs are always changing as it is a teaching hospital, but they
have the best equipment, and newest technology for these large dog
orthopedic surgeries if that is what is needed.
We also had knee surgery done down in Inver Grove Heights by a Dr Levine who
is excellent.
Best of luck to you and your girl.

I agree, could be a ligament tear. I had a newf mix several years ago with one. We did a TPLO 10 years ago at the UofM and I feel like it was the worst decision. If I could do it over, I'd exhaust conservative care first. I've heard the vet mentioned in Inver Grove is good. My new vet is Mike Bahr in Hastings. He's raised Newfs for years (hasn't had one in a while) he knows the breed. Just get a second and third opinion if you can!

Hi Liz,
We have two Newfs and one lab and have owned Newfs for about 30 years. Our
Newfs are the "infamous" Munchie age 3 (she is doing wonderfully for those
of you who know her story), Chester age 12 and the lab is Joker age 14.
When we adopted Joker in 2008 he could only move around by dragging his
butt because of huge problems with his rear legs. We had one of his rear
legs rebuilt by Dr. Michael Conzemius at the U of M. Dr. Conzemius is a
leg/bone guy. Joker, at 14, ambles around with the best of them even
today. We would recommend Dr. Conzemius without reservation and with the
highest rating. HIs bedside manner may not be his strong point, but his
skill, expertise, dedication and commitment are not in doubt. We wish you
and your Newf the best.
