CALL FOR ART

The Helen S. Smith Gallery in partnership with Art at The Cave presents Art of the Quarantine this January, virtually featuring works by approximately 100 artists from Art at the Cave in various stages of their creative growth.  This exhibition brings us together while we continue to be apart.  Stay tuned for the opening of the first phase of this exhibition on the Helen S. Smith Galleryhttps://www.greenriver.edu/community/art-gallery/ website https://www.greenriver.edu/community/art-gallery/ January 10th, 2021.

Art of the Quarantine will function as a prompt for a bigger community conversation and response as it moves to Green River College.  That’s where you come in!  Helen S. Smith Gallery partnered with Art at the Cave to continue the conversation by extending and building on the exhibition as a way to support artists, build community and dive into a bigger academic conversation about the role of art during the pandemic.  It is often said that “art reflects life.”  During this unprecedented time, art for many is a way to address psychological and emotional undertones without words.  Art is a therapeutic coping mechanism, it is self-expression in isolation, it brings us together as a shared experience, and for many, a cultural necessity as we move toward recovery.  We are calling for art made in response to this prompt.

Art of the Quarantine continues as a rolling exhibition into the spring accompanied by artist talks and discussions.  All works submitted by artists working in the Northwest will be featured virtually on the Helen S. Smith Gallery website until April, 2021.  Additionally, from the works submitted, a curated exhibition of a select few pieces will be featured by the Helen S. Smith Gallery in April.  One artist will be selected for a solo exhibition physically in the Gallery in 2023.

The Helen S. Smith Gallery on Green River College’s main campus was named in honor of the college Foundation’s first President. In addition to being one of the college’s founding members, she was known as a strong advocate for the arts in the community.  Now 50 years and counting, the gallery continues to carry on her legacy by presenting compelling and innovative exhibitions featuring emerging and established Northwest Artists throughout the year.  The gallery also highlights works by Green River student artists twice annually.
