From Jamie Meyers:

11/3 -- Litchfield, North Bay of Bantam Lake as seen from the Town Beach -- the female BLACK SCOTER continues, this afternoon in the company of 2 Ruddy Ducks.

Spurred on by Black Scoter reports from east of me, I decided to make a run at the large bodies of water that are relatively nearby. Barkhamsted and Nepaug Reservoirs were completely empty, as was the section of Colebrook Lake that can be seen from the Goodwin Dam. I have never seen that body of water so low. A consolation prize for me were 5 Green-winged Teal south of the Saville Dam, in the north end of Lake McDonough. Disappointed, I went down to Litchfield for the scoter to add her to my year (and Litchfield town) list. Bantam Lake had decent numbers of Ruddy Ducks and a few Bufflehead. 'Twas bloody cold in the wind.

I appreciate seeing the other scoter reports on here even though I didn't have time to chase them. I quite enjoy looking for those tight, nervous flocks on inland lakes. Seems like there are one or two November days in particular that are good for them, along with other scoters and sometimes grebes and Oldsquaw too. Today appears to have been mildly good in that regard. Perhaps tomorrow might be as well, with more cold coming -- though the scoters seldom stick on inland lakes more than a day.

At Lighthouse, we had one juv. Northern Goshawk, a slew of Red-tails - and a LPP record 5 Golden Eagles.?

At 4:00 this afternoon, while pulling up Beets in the garden, I hear a roukus?
of Ravens above. I look up, and see 3 Raven dive bombing an adult GOSHAWK!

Throughout the day above the yard, I saw at least 5 Redtail Hawks moving.?
Must have been a great day today for them migrating at the Hawk watches.

Bev,

In early November, Common Grackles and other blackbirds move near the coast, just after dawn, in huge clouds.? We had 32,000 Grackles this morning at Lighthouse.? That's my guess!

11/3? Orange,
I took an early neighborhood walk this morning in Orange.? As I walked at
intersection of Martin Lane & Christian Circle (7:30AM) I heard lots of
honking and looked up to see 2 flocks of Canada Geese in lines.? But then
what caught my eye were hundreds/thousands of tiny dark flecks high up in
the sky.
These birds were on the same path (flying east to west) as the Canadas,
following behind and this flock (hard for me to estimate but it had to be
hundreds, probably thousands) continued for about 2 minutes as I continued
to watch in awe.? Even though I couldn't identify them, it was the
most (assumed) migrators, I personally have seen, other than in photos or
videos.? It was amazingly awesome? (not enough adjectives).

Approximately 12 Bufflehead and 30-40 Black Scoters observed Sunday afternoon in the south Pond of Congamond Lakes.  Birds were technically in Southwick, MA waters but could be seen from the eastern shoreline in Suffield, CT.
