I have used such a "vernier" setup to measure stuff in the FreeBSD kernel
and once you get the setup right, the reproducibility is very good.

Indeed. This also explains why I had an extra 5 MHz OCXO with me to the summer
house. I had a counter to debug and could just not leave it alone for two
weeks.

Come to think of it, my summer house doesn't have a GPS antenna yeat. It's
quite close to you actually.
