Although we removed the lablels, used sharpies and varnished the cans on some of our voyages to Mexico in the 60's and 70's, we realized that this was no longer necessary by the 80's. We stored all goods in plastic containers with lids--that way it kept the salt water off, allowed easy inventory and finding the food store.

We took no paper bags or large cardboard boxes aboard--and never had roach problems.  The smaller boxes we microwaved, to kill weevels or other insects, and then either put the content in plastic bags (used a "seal a meal"--or screw top glass/plastic containers.
