Adding to a record's fieldsReturned list

I'm looking to add additional terms to the fieldsReturned list for a
procedural record so that I can get additional values from a LIST API
call. I see there is a way to add ListResultField values in the
tenant-bindings file (I see they are declared in the -proto.xml file)
but is this only limited to fields that are defined in the common
schema? For instance, I'd like to add a field from an extended media
schema but when I do I get an error in return. Is there a way to
define DocHandlerParams params to point to an extended schema and not
just the common one?

See an example in the checked in lifesci tenant for how to add from an
extension schema.
