Fellow Municipal Practitioners:
I hope that you are all having a great weekend! I was researching best practices on municipal solid waste contracts and ran across an awesome document entitled Is Your Waste Contract Putting Your Municipality at Risk? You can scan this document fairly quickly and it contains sample language for solid waste contracts. I hope that you will find this information helpful.
By way of reminder, the Oklahoma Solid Waste Management Act is codified in 27A O.S. Sections 2-10-101 through 2-10-1001, with Sections 2-10-901 and 2-10-902 being particularly applicable. 11 O.S. Section 105.1 also addresses the collection of solid waste.
As you review your solid waste contracts, you may also want to consider sustainability, including collection events for recyclable materials, tires, batteries, sharps and e-waste. There are a several organizations that may be able to assist you in this regard, particularly if you have a rural client. Household hazardous waste should also be considered, likely by contracting with an existing facility.
On a completely unrelated topic, the OAMA Board has once again authorized ten (10) $1,000.00 scholarships to the IMLA Annual Conference. The Conference will be held in Portland, Oregon, October 19-23. This is a reimbursement scholarship, so those awarded scholarships would register and make their own travel arrangements. After the conference, the attorney (or their municipality) would be reimbursed the costs. If you are interested in a scholarship, please e-mail me and Kathryn Walker. I have included a link below for ease of reference.
