Standing right now on the coast in Norwalk, 610am, hundreds of flight calls per minute in the fog. Amazing.

Things are quieting down right now at 640am just before sunrise, but the density was unbelievable earlier. I'm going to make estimates by doing some math later but you couldn't go 2 sec without a Swainson's Thrush, and double-digit Gray-cheek including one higher pitched bird that may have been Bicknell's. We'll see if my iPhone spectrogram image will be enough to distinguish.

Not sure what this will mean for this morning's birding but it couldn't hurt to get out and look, particularly along the coast.

They're still going in lower density now.

I had the same here in Fairfield. I opened the doors to let my dog out at 6:30 am, and I heard flight calls everywhere in the fog. I got out my bins and stayed out there for about 5 mins, and I had an Eastern Towhee fly in from the sound into my yard, and a Common Nighthawk flew over as well, which is getting a bit late I think. Tons of other call notes which I could not identify, although I could hear many Yellow-rumped Warblers. Birds are certainly moving out there today.

And the radar at that time was showing a lot of echoes over SW CT (Fairfield, New Haven and Middlesex Counties) in particular.  Some in Litchfield and Hartford Counties as well.  Tolland, Windham and New London Counties look pretty quiet, but there's another blob over east-central Mass and RI.  The blob appears especially dense around the mouth of the Housatonic right now, so maybe they're going down in Milford/Stratford.  I bet Long Island will be hopping with birds this AM too.

It isn't totally coastal, but is certainly near-shore related. The birds
moving from clear skies into the fog banks of the shore and near-shore
causes them to concentrate where the visibility goes lousy. Here in Norwich
I had fog at dawn as well and a pretty good wave of Titmouses, Chickadees,
and Red-breasted Nuthatches just moved by. Coastal areas should prove
interesting but the lower reaches of the larger river valleys should have
plenty of birds as well.

When I left Cove Island wildlife sanctuary at 7:45 am, there was still dense fog and birds were continually dropping out of the sky. There seemed to be a good movement of sparrows, of those seen were: 2 White-crowned, 1 Lincoln's, several Swamp and Savannah as well as Song, many birds perched in trees and bushes dripping wet and they were everywhere - too many to look at in a short time. There were 5 Marsh Wrens seen well and at least 5 others crossing the path to the pond area; two were were softly vocalizing. I also flushed a rail which flew up briefly and flitted down a short distance beyond. Unfortunately because of poor light conditions I could not identify it although I suspect Virginia based on color and size. Hopefully many birders will and have had an opportunity to enjoy good numbers and varieties of birds today. Just the experience of hearing them call pre-dawn, of morning flight and watching them come in was spectacular.
