Hi,   I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions on books, articles, publications etc. that I should check out for my oral exams (and subsequent dissertation research).  I have chosen to be tested in the area of virtual community, and thought you would have the best ideas.   Thanks in advance for your help, Alison

Alison, You may be interested in a paper a colleague and I recently published on email interaction: Menchik, D., and X. Tian. (2008) "Putting Social Contexts into Text: The Semiotics of Email Interaction." /The American Journal of Sociology/. 114:2 pp. 332-70.
