2014 Top Campuses Worth Traveling For:
University of Puget Sound is One!
TripAdvisor affiliate scours the country for "must-see" campuses
[cid:image004.jpg@01CF9144.7EDE3850]TACOMA, Wash. - In a recent interview with Tacoma's News Tribune, a University of Puget Sound graduate remarked that the college campus looks "like a school from a Harry Potter bookhttp://www.thenewstribune.com/2014/06/14/3243168/persistence-respect-for-the-sea.html?sp=/99/296/331//."
It seems he is not alone in this view. The national liberal arts college has been named one of 50 "Top Campuses Worth Traveling For"http://www.flipkey.com/blog/2014/06/18/50-states-series-top-campuses-worth-traveling-for/ by FlipKeyhttp://www.flipkey.com/pages/about_us/, a vacation home company owned by the global travel site TripAdvisor. The Boston-based company chose one campus from each of the 50 states and named Puget Sound the "must-see" college in Washington.
The 50 colleges and universities were judged based on industry research and traveler feedback, FlipKey said. The process singled out beautiful campuses that offered the best attractions, architecture, and history in the country.
Others on the top-50 list included Stanford University (Calif.), The University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University (Md.), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University (N.J), and Cornell University (N.Y.). Puget Sound was especially recognized for:
Gordon Dee Alcorn Arboretum<http://www.pugetsound.edu/about/offices-services/university-relations/donor-relations/named-sites-on-campus/campus-spaces/alcorn-arboretum/>, a richly wooded area, west of Collins Memorial Library, that includes towering Douglas firs on a pine-needle floor. Gordon Alcorn '30, a Puget Sound biology professor and campus arborist, was recognized for his dedication to students, academic excellence, and the preservation of nature.
Kittredge Hall and Art Gallery<http://www.pugetsound.edu/virtual-tour/m/detail/c19/>, with its teaching studios and free public art exhibits that feature regional and nationally-recognized artists throughout the school year. Each spring the Senior Art Show exhibits works by Puget Sound studio art major seniors.
On its blog, FlipKey explains that for freshmen college students, "choosing the right place to call home for the next four years is a major decision. The people, the classes, the professors, the social life, and the sporting events all can vault a college onto a short list-but it is the setting that leaves a lasting impression."
The recognition is one of several received by University of Puget Sound pertaining to its campus and facilities. In previous years the school has been recognized for its beautiful campus and "Best Science Lab Facilities" by The Princeton Review, as well as for its vibrant setting, innovation, and teaching excellence by the book Colleges That Change Liveshttp://www.amazon.com/Colleges-That-Change-Lives-Schools/dp/0143122304. In the 2013-14 school year, the college was honored with a 2013 Tree Campus USA distinctionhttp://www.pugetsound.edu/news-and-events/campus-news/details/1277/ by the Arbor Day Foundation and a 2013 Green Starhttp://www.pugetsound.edu/news-and-events/campus-news/details/1247/ by the national Professional Grounds Management Society.
