Transmission Rebuild or New?

Greetings,

I'm faced with the prospect of rebuilding/replacing my 1990 vintage, 3150 hr.
Velvet Drive CR2 transmission. It seems to be working well enough now but
sometimes is a little hard to shift and is leaking slightly form the rear
seals. I am told that these transmissions have a life of around 2500-3000 hrs
before rebuild and are prone to a few problems.

Some say that they can be rebuilt if not damaged; others say that they were a
bad design to begin with and should be replaced.

I have an estimate for rebuild at about $2,000. Don't know what to replace
with or at what cost.

What says the group?

John

A common replacement is a Twin Disc tranny.  Not cheap, but a bulletproof
answer.  As for other Lehman/Velvet Drive issues, Bob and Brian at American
Diesel are invaluable for info and advice.

On Rollsdoc I replaced the CR2s with ZF 63As. Cost for 2 of them was $3400. Much better in my opinion than the Twin Discs. Almost plug and play compared to the Twin Disc. Same bolt pattern to the bell housing. Same spline on the input shaft (same damper plate) Same bolt pattern on the shaft coupling. Total cost for me was about 4K. Course I did the work.
The 63A is 10 degree down angle so no my Lehmans are near level now. Had to remark the dip sticks. The model 63s are drop downs like the Borg Warners and Twin Discs. With the twin disc you'll have to raise the engine front and rear by 2 ". With the ZF63 by 3". By using the 63As I lowered the front of the engines by 3"

The Twin Discs need an?adapter?plate for the bell housing and a different damper plate. With either Twin Disc or ZF you'll need a short jack shaft. Unless you replace your shaft or move the engine back 8" ?I moved my engines back 2" and made a 6" shaft. The ZFs need a high pressure cooler but I already had them.

I am aware of a 49 Defever that had a problem with the replacement Twin Disc and made them go away in favor of the ZF63s. I have friend that installed thee 63s in his 48 Defever and swears by them.

I have to carry ATF now as ZF said I needed to use ATF insted of the SAE40 I'd been running in my BWs. The ZFs are a bit noisey in gear at?idle?but it goes away under load.
